Subject: Math
Unit 3 Lesson Grade 6: Geometry
Curriculum Expectations: classify and construct angles
Duration: 50 minutes
Specific Expectations:
1) Classify an acute, right, obtuse and straight angle
2) Measure and construct angles up to 180° using a protractor

Learning goals/objectives:

1. Develop familiarity of angles alone and within shapes.
2. Develop familiarity of use of a protractor for measuring different angles.
Method of Evaluation
Rubrics- (Appendix C )
1). Developmental strategy # 3 (individual worksheet)
2). Questions during Individual Worksheets
i. Estimate the first 3 angles on your worksheet. What strategy did you use to make your estimate? (possible answer, used the right angle of a paper to estimate whether it is larger or smaller than 90 degrees)
ii. Are there any angles on your worksheet the same? Why would you say that they are similar (possible answer: None of them share the same degrees of angle but many of them are acute angles)
3). Concluding activity. Completion of journal entry
Materials: Smart board, internet, scissors, angle chart, work sheet (30 copies)
Resources:
1). http://www.math-drills.com/geometry.shtml - ( group worksheet)
2). http://www.math-drills.com/geometry/geo_namingangles_002.pdf -( individual)
3).Answer Key: Appendix A
Introductory Activity: (5minutes)
Show 3 pictures. (Appendix B) Following the video ask the children
1. What do they see in these pictures?
2. Does anyone think these pictures can relate to math?
Teacher prompts: these pictures all have the angles that I will be talking today in the class.
Developmental strategies:
1) Power Point (10minutes)(appendix A) – definition of angles
2) Group worksheet (15minutes) – examples of classifying and measuring angles with a protractor as a group using the smart board.
3) Individual worksheet (10minutes) – each student will be assigned with a work sheet.
Concluding activity:
-write in their journals about today’s lesson and relate it to real life.
Follow-up ideas: reflex angles and the circle (360°)
